Bronco Roast
You may be driving your next kitchen
"Whatcha got goin' under thar?", the old-timer at the gas station in Walsenberg asked me as I stepped out to gas up.

With pride I beamed. "A roast! ...and some corn on the cob!"

Casually he said, "Hmmm, we al'ays use-ta do us some hot dogs an' a can o' beans. Never did try anything fancy. Hmmm, I'll hafta give it a go."
Unimpressed, he wandered off. Old-timers had been doing this for years: using the hot engines of their cars to cook on while they drive.

Newer cars don't work as well. Our '78 Ford Bronco is perfect. It has all the nooks and crannies for your feast to nestle snugly on top of the manifold while you zoom across the country exploring!


Roasted Fish
Oil fish.
Sprinkle with fresh chopped garlic and parsley.
Cover with a few lemon slices.
Season with sweet basil and salt & pepper.

Fish takes less time than beef.

Roast Beef
Trim excess fat (don't want a fire under there!)
Oil roast lightly.
Sprinkle with fresh chopped onions, garlic and parsley.
Season with paprika and salt & pepper.

Watch out for the delicious hot juice when you open the foil!.

Corn on the Cob
Shick all but the inner 2-3 layers of leaves and remove silk.
Rub with oil and butter.
Season with salt & pepper.
Re-cover with remaining corn leaves and double-wrap with foil.

The basics:
  • The food should be double-wrapped in aluminum foil, shiney side in.
  • The food should be lightly covered in olive or vegetable oil to prevent burns, even if you add butter for flavor.
  • Don't obstruct any moving parts (like the throttle!) if you use a wire to hold your food in place. We preferred not to use anything on the Bronco. It's recesses were deep enough to keep the food in place under the carburator, on top of the manifold.
  • When is it ready?
    You'll probably start to smell your food right about when it's nearly done. We drove for about 3 hours with our 1 lb. roast. It never hurts to stop and check until you get used to your new mobile stove. What's nice about car-cooking is that your meat gets done slowly and so it turns out very tender.
  • Start looking for a nice picnic spot or rest area.
